Gampi Paper

A Distinctive Medium for Fine Art Photography

Jason L. Bishop offers select photographic works printed on traditional Gampi paper, a rare and highly regarded Japanese paper known for its natural strength, translucence, and organic texture. This medium is chosen intentionally to complement the quiet presence and individuality found in his wildlife imagery.

What Is Gampi Paper

Gampi paper is made from the inner bark of the gampi plant and has been used for centuries in traditional Japanese papermaking. Unlike conventional photographic papers, it has a naturally warm tone, subtle surface variation, and a delicate translucency that allows light to interact with the image in a unique way.
Its durability and refined texture make it especially suited for fine art applications where material quality is as important as the image itself.

The Printing Process

Each Gampi paper work begins as a carefully processed photographic image, printed using a specialized process designed to preserve fine detail and tonal subtlety. The paper’s surface softens transitions while maintaining clarity, resulting in an image that feels tactile and dimensional.
Many pieces are printed on two layers of Gampi paper, hand-deckled, and professionally framed. This layered presentation enhances depth and reinforces the handcrafted nature of the finished work.

Limited and Intentional

Gampi paper works are produced in limited editions and offered selectively. Due to the nature of the material and the printing process, each piece carries slight variations that make it uniquely its own.
These works are intended for collectors who value craftsmanship, material integrity, and a quieter, more contemplative viewing experience.
